How to test your microphone

  1. Press Start mic test. Your browser asks for microphone access. Choose Allow.
  2. Speak or clap. The meter and the waveform should jump with every word. The device line shows which microphone is in use.
  3. Pick another microphone from the list if the wrong one is active, for example your headset instead of the laptop mic.
  4. Record 5 seconds and play it back to hear how you sound to others: muffled, noisy, too quiet or clear.

A good speaking level peaks between about -20 dB and -6 dB. If the meter hits 0 dB and turns red, your voice clips and will sound distorted, so move back or lower the input volume. If it never rises above -40 dB, you will sound quiet: move closer or raise the input volume in your system sound settings.

Microphone not working? Fix it step by step

You clicked Block, or the browser never asked

The browser remembers your choice. Click the icon to the left of the web address (a lock, sliders or a microphone with a cross), set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. In Chrome you can also open Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Microphone. In Safari open Settings for this website (Safari menu on a Mac, the aA button on an iPhone) and set Microphone to Allow. In Firefox click the crossed-out microphone in the address bar and remove the block.

Your computer blocks the browser

Windows and macOS can block the microphone for a whole app, and the browser then reports access denied even if you allowed it on the page.

No microphone found

The browser sees no input device at all. Plug the headset or USB microphone in again, try another port, and check that Bluetooth headphones are connected as a headset, not only for music. On a desktop PC without a built-in mic you need an external one. Then press Start mic test again.

Microphone in use or not readable

Another app may hold the microphone exclusively. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS or a second browser tab that uses it, then try again. On Windows, a disabled device in Sound settings shows the same error.

The meter does not move

The microphone is connected but sends silence. Check for a mute switch on the headset or cable, a mute key on the keyboard (often F4 or a key with a crossed microphone) and the input volume in your system sound settings. Then pick each microphone from the list here: the one that moves when you speak is the one that works.

In-app browsers

Links opened inside apps like Instagram or Facebook often cannot use the microphone. Open this page in Safari, Chrome or Firefox instead.

Questions and answers

How do I test my microphone online?

Press Start mic test and allow microphone access when your browser asks. Speak normally: the level meter and the waveform move with your voice. If they stay flat, pick another microphone from the list or follow the troubleshooting steps on this page.

Is my audio recorded or uploaded?

No. The sound is analysed live in your browser and never leaves your device. The optional 5 second recording is kept only in this tab's memory and is gone when you record again, reload or close the page.

Why does my browser not ask for microphone permission?

You probably blocked it earlier. Click the icon left of the address bar (a lock, slider or microphone icon), set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.

What is a good microphone level?

For speech, aim for peaks between about -20 dB and -6 dB on the meter. Peaks that hit 0 dB clip and sound distorted; levels that stay below -40 dB will sound quiet and noisy in calls.

Why does my mic work here but not in Zoom, Teams or Discord?

Each app picks its own input device. Open the app's audio settings and choose the same microphone that worked here. Also check that the app has microphone permission in your system privacy settings.

Does the mic test work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on phones and tablets. On iPhone the microphone list shows only the built-in mic unless a headset or Bluetooth device is connected.
